Q: What will the restaurant look like?

A: The proposed restaurant will be single-storey and will be in keeping with McDonald's new restaurant designs currently being rolled out around the country. The development will have a fresh, contemporary and high-quality design.

Q: What hours will it operate?

A: We propose to operate the Balmoral restaurant 24-hours, seven days a week, for the convenience of our customers. A 24-hour McDonald’s is a good fit for this area as there’s also a 24-hour BP station up the road, Burger King is open late (and serves breakfast), KFC is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, and there is also a 24-hour Foodtown in the area.

Q: How many car parks will the restaurant provide?

A: The proposed restaurant will provide 63 on-site car parks, eight more than is required by the District Plan.

An additional five public car parks will be created on Wiremu Street due to a re-design of the curb/ footpath area.

Q: Will any existing trees have to be removed?

A: Seven trees are required to be removed in order to build the proposed restaurant. These trees are listed as ‘generally protected trees’ under the District Plan, which is the title given to any tree over six metres.

One large cherry tree is to be removed to build one of the driveways and six smaller trees, of different varieties, will also be removed. Some of those being removed are in poor health.

We have employed a highly-regarded landscape design company – Gaynor Revill Design – to produce a landscape plan for the proposed development. The landscape plan includes dense native hedges to create buffers between the site and adjoining properties, rain garden areas and low-growing plants for the median strips. The entrance on Balmoral Road will be enhanced with new plantings of a honey locust and cabbage trees, and colourful flax species.

Q: Why have you chosen this site?

A: We’ve been looking for a site in Balmoral for a while as it’s an area that we don’t currently service well. This is a great site for us because it’s not only in a hot spot of restaurants and eateries, but it’s on a main arterial – Balmoral Road – and close to Dominion Road as well.

There are a number of restaurants along Dominion Road including Wendy’s, pizza outlets, and a KFC opposite our proposed site. We are a great fit with this area and want to be part of the mix.

Q: How many vehicles will the proposed restaurant generate?

A: Please see information about traffic on the Key Facts page.

Q: How many people will the proposed restaurant employ?

A: Once open, the restaurant will employ around 50 people. McDonald’s is one of the best training grounds for young people entering the workforce and our training programmes are now NZQA accredited.

Q: When will the hearing be held?

A: The council has not yet set a date. Any queries regarding the hearing are best directed to the council on (09) 379 2020.
